Starlink vs VSAT vs LTE vs Fibre: Connectivity Options for Remote Sabah Sites

Connectivity, not compute or software, is usually the single biggest constraint on running modern business systems at a remote Sabah site. The right answer depends heavily on where the site actually is, and the four realistic options perform very differently once you're outside easy fibre reach.

Fibre: the benchmark, when it's actually reachable
Fibre remains the best option on every metric that matters — latency, throughput, reliability — wherever it's physically available. The problem in Sabah is straightforward: fibre economics don't work for low-density rural and remote sites, and large parts of the state simply aren't reached by it, regardless of budget.
LTE / cellular: fast to deploy, least reliable at the edge
Cellular data is the cheapest and quickest option to stand up, and it's a reasonable primary or backup connection close to populated areas. The catch is coverage reliability the further a site sits from a tower — we've tested sites in rural Sabah where cellular signal was completely dead, making LTE unusable as anything other than a supplementary link near town.
VSAT: the traditional satellite fallback
Geostationary VSAT has been the standard remote-site fallback for years precisely because its coverage doesn't depend on terrestrial infrastructure at all. The tradeoff is latency — geostationary satellites sit roughly 36,000km up, and that round trip adds noticeable lag to anything real-time, on top of typically higher equipment and airtime cost than the alternatives.
Starlink: satellite internet close to fibre performance
Starlink's low-earth-orbit satellites sit a fraction of the distance from earth that geostationary satellites do, which is why it delivers meaningfully lower latency and higher throughput than traditional VSAT. In our own testing at a rural Sabah site with completely dead cellular signal, a Starlink Flat High Performance dish achieved roughly 80Mbps download and 30Mbps upload — with some throttling from weather and mountain terrain, but still a workable connection where nothing else reached.
Combining them: bonding and failover, not picking one
For sites where connectivity actually matters operationally, the more resilient answer is usually not choosing a single option at all. SD-WAN hardware — we deploy Peplink for this — can bond or fail over automatically between Starlink, cellular and any fixed-line connection that exists, so the site doesn't go dark when one link drops.
How to decide for your site
If fibre reaches you, take it. If it doesn't, Starlink is now the strongest single option for most remote Sabah sites, with LTE as a low-cost secondary link where coverage allows, and VSAT reserved for the rare case where line-of-sight or regulatory constraints rule Starlink out. A proper site survey — covering power, mounting and actual connectivity requirements — is what actually determines the right combination.
