What PRTG Network Monitor does
PRTG monitors infrastructure using sensors — each sensor tracks one metric, such as a switch port's traffic, a server's CPU load, or a link's uptime — polled via SNMP, WMI, SSH, HTTP, NetFlow and other protocols, with alerts firing when a value crosses a threshold. Paessler's freeware tier runs up to 100 sensors at no cost, which is enough for a small network's core devices.
