Veeam: built for virtualized and hybrid environments
Veeam is purpose-built backup software rather than a storage appliance, and it shows in the feature set — granular, application-aware recovery, support for virtual machines, physical servers and cloud workloads from one console, and the flexibility to back up to a Synology NAS, the cloud, or both at once. It's the right choice once your environment is more than a single file server, or once recovery-time and recovery-point requirements get specific enough that you need control over exactly what gets restored and how fast.
Cloud-native: the right fit when everything already lives there
If your business runs entirely on Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or a cloud-hosted platform, a cloud-native backup tool designed for that platform can make sense — it avoids introducing on-prem hardware for a business that otherwise has none. The gap to watch for is retention and versioning: native platform tools are not always built with the same restore granularity or retention control as dedicated backup software, so it's worth checking exactly what's covered before assuming it's equivalent.
