Foxit PDF Editor vs Adobe Acrobat: Features and Cost Compared

Published by Hakobi · 20 September 2026

For most businesses "PDF software" has meant one product for twenty years: Adobe Acrobat. It is still a capable product, but it is also one of the more expensive line items on a per-seat software bill, and it is often bought by default rather than by comparison. Foxit PDF Editor covers the same everyday work (editing, converting, signing, redacting, OCR) for roughly 30% less at list price. This guide compares the two on features, AI, deployment and cost, and says where Acrobat is still the better choice depending on your use case.

Why look at an Acrobat alternative now

Three things are worth knowing. Adobe's range now tops out with an AI-and-workspace tier, Acrobat Studio, that not every office needs. Adobe no longer sells a perpetual licence: its last one was Acrobat 2020, and Acrobat Pro 2024 is a three-year term licence. And Foxit covers the everyday feature set at a lower cost, and still sells a genuine perpetual licence.

What Foxit PDF Editor does

Foxit describes PDF Editor as a desktop, mobile and web product for editing, converting, signing and managing PDFs. Its own product page lists:

  • Editing of text and images, page organisation, OCR to make scanned paper searchable, form creation and password protection.
  • A built-in document management system (DMS) with version control and shared workspaces, plus commenting and review tools.
  • An AI Assistant for summarising, translating, extracting information and chatting with a document, with 300 free credits a month on subscriptions.
  • On the PDF Editor+ tier: mobile apps, AI-powered Smart Redact for personal data, and Foxit eSign with 150 envelopes a year.
  • Integrations with Microsoft 365, SharePoint and Google Drive.

Feature comparison

This table uses the vendors' own pages. Where a cell says "not stated", we did not find it on the page we checked, which is not the same as saying it is absent, so check a specific feature against a trial before you commit.

Cost compared

We compared the vendors' published list prices for individual plans, as they stood on 20 September 2026, before tax and before any volume discount. Set Foxit PDF Editor+ (mobile, Smart Redact and eSign) against Acrobat Pro and Foxit comes out around 30% cheaper. Against the basic Foxit PDF Editor tier the gap is wider. Foxit also sells PDF Editor 14 as a perpetual licence, paid once, which Adobe no longer offers.

That saving is our comparison of published prices and a real quote will differ, since prices change and vary by region and licence term. It scales with headcount, so it matters most for offices with dozens of seats where most staff only need to view, sign and make simple edits.

Deployment and administration

The difference that matters to an IT team is whether the tool can be rolled out and controlled like everything else. Foxit's deployment guides describe an MSI installer that works with Group Policy, Microsoft Intune and SCCM, plus a Customisation Wizard for pre-setting options. Its cloud Admin Console manages licences and users centrally, with SAML single sign-on that Foxit says works with Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Google Workspace and others. Foxit also lists SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR and HIPAA-readiness for PDF Editor.

Where Acrobat is still the better choice

  • Adobe-centred workflows. If your team lives in Creative Cloud or has built processes around Adobe Sign, staying inside one vendor has value.
  • Files that depend on Adobe-specific features. Complex forms and scripted workflows are where any two PDF editors can differ. Test your real documents.
  • You want the AI and workspace bundle. Studio is aimed at people who summarise and reuse a lot of documents with AI. If that is your use, compare it against Foxit's AI credits rather than assuming either wins.

How to switch without disruption

  1. Inventory who actually uses what. Most staff need viewing, signing and simple edits, and a smaller group needs OCR, redaction and forms.
  2. Pilot with real files. Try a small group on your own forms, scanned documents and signed PDFs for a couple of weeks.
  3. Deploy centrally. Roll it out with your normal tooling (Intune or Group Policy) and set Foxit as the default handler for PDF files, so nobody has to think about it.
  4. Retire Acrobat licences at renewal. Don't pay for both. Match cancellation to your Adobe renewal date.

Sabah context

Software licences are one of the easier places for a small or mid-sized Sabah business to trim recurring cost without touching the systems staff rely on, and a perpetual licence is paid once rather than every year in US dollars. Hakobi is one of Foxit's resellers, so we can supply, pilot and roll out Foxit PDF Editor as part of Managed IT Services, including central deployment and licence tracking. Pricing depends on the number of seats, the tier and the licence term, so request a quote and we'll scope it from there.
